LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Compare two ID controversies

Tue, Apr 13, 2021 (2 a.m.)

Conservatives argue that requiring proof of having received a COVID-19 vaccination limits liberty. This at a time when Republican-controlled legislatures around the country are passing laws that place significant limitations on American citizens’ ability to vote. Let’s compare.

Voter ID is a solution to a potential problem, meaning a problem that does not exist. There is no widespread voter fraud in America. Still there is a massive campaign to institute voter ID and other more insidious ways to make voting harder. In some cases, citizens would be required to pay for the ID and transportation to get to the facility. They would be required to have a state- or federally issued ID to get the voter ID. If they happen to have no birth certificate or are so disabled or poor to access the ID, then they wouldn’t get to vote. Their liberty would be denied.

A vaccine ID it would be free to all who get the shot(s). It would be provided digitally. Americans with compromised immune systems would feel safe to travel or go to movies and restaurants.

If Republican-controlled legislatures want to make voting safer, we could make voting free with easy access, just like the vaccine passport.

How is a free ID, designed to protect the most vulnerable, an intrusion, but one that is costly and difficult to obtain less intrusive?
