Javontae Barnes had four touchdowns and 139 rushing yards on 17 carries for the Desert Pines football team in a 38-13 win at Palo Verde.

Like most teams in the initial week of the season, coach Tico Rodriguez said his team made a few too many mistakes — all of which can be fixed.

“They gave a great effort. This was the first game for most of these kids in two years,” he said. “Most good teams improve from Week 1 to Week 2, so we’ll see where we are at next week.”

Sophomore Greg Burrell also found success on the ground with five carries for 69 yards and a touchdown, while freshman Journey Solomon had seven catches for 70 yards. Brother Jett Solomon added four catches for 45 yards, and Lamont Brown had four catches for 88 yards.

Quarterback Rjay Tagataese completed 16 of 24 passes for 228 yards, helping the Jags jump out to a 24-0 halftime lead.
