Silver Knights coach Manny Viveiros will begin a leave of absence this week to undergo treatment for prostate cancer, the team announced today.

Viveiros, 55, announced his diagnosis in October and missed the early part of the season for his first round of treatment. His latest absence was planned, and he is expected to be away from the team for three to four weeks.

Viveiros’ cancer was detected early, and the prognosis for his recovery is good, he said last month. He said a routine blood test returned abnormally high levels of PSA, a protein that can indicate prostate cancer.

In his absence, assistant coach Jamie Heward will serve as interim coach.

The Silver Knights next play Friday on the road against the Rockford IceHogs. Their next home game is Dec. 18 against the Abbotsford Canucks at Orleans Arena.
