LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Nation has become obsessed with walls

As part of his political campaign, Donald Trump called for a big, beautiful wall to be built at our southern border to keep out foreigners.

As president, he took billions of dollars from the military budget to get the effort going when Congress failed to give him funding.

With the new administration in place, construction has halted.

Trump, through his part in facilitating the Jan. 6 insurrection, caused new fencing to be placed around the Capitol, the Supreme Court and certain monuments, plus upgraded fencing around the White House. There is talk about fencing around the Pentagon.

All of this is to keep not foreigners but American citizens away from public facilities, detracting from our most valued freedom of movement. All of us need to work our way out of this fixation on walls and fences, and get back to our free open society.
