With temperatures projected to reach 116 degrees in the Las Vegas area this weekend and wildfires scorching the Western states, NV Energy is asking residents to conserve energy between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. today and Sunday.

The effort is “to help offset energy supply issues” caused by record-breaking temperatures and wildfires “affecting regional transmission lines,” the utility company said.

The projected 116 degrees at McCarran International Airport is one degree shy of an all-time record, according to the National Weather Service.

The 94 degrees measured about 4:30 a.m. was just one degree short of the all-time warmest minimum temperature, the weather service said.

NV Energy instructs residents to turn off lights and pool pumps, and to unplug appliances that aren’t being used. Large appliances — washers, dryers and dishwashers — shouldn’t not be used during the three-hour periods, the utility company said.

The “dangerous” weather conditions in Las Vegas, which triggered an excessive heat warning, will continue through Monday, said the weather service, which forecasts a high of 115 on Sunday, 112 on Monday and 108 on Tuesday.

People in the area should hydrate and try to stay indoors, the weather service said.
