Could UNLV football have a 'magical' season?

Another season of UNLV football is quickly approaching, and there’s much to talk about.

Another season of UNLV football is quickly approaching, and there’s much to talk about.

First, the positives: A full season of fans at Allegiant Stadium, two great recruiting classes, talented wide receiver Kyle Williams, strong veterans who are battled tested like Charles Williams, Jacoby Windmon and Julio Garcia. Most important, however, we should see more than six games after the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

“It’s a great opportunity. Not many college football teams get to play in an NFL stadium, especially a fresh and new one like that. I’m grateful to be in there,” said Charles Williams, the Rebels’ sixth-year running back. He got an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic.

Next, the negatives: The team is projected to win fewer than two games and finish last in its division of the Mountain West; in-state rival UNR appears to be atop the league; the quarterback position has three players with little experience; and the defense might still be bad.

In this edition of the “Rebel Room,” the Sun’s Mike Grimala and Ray Brewer take a look at the upcoming season, including a game-by-game breakdown. We both have the Rebels starting 1-0 with a win Sept. 2 against visiting Eastern Washington.
