LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Electric vehicles not so helpless

Fri, Mar 5, 2021 (2 a.m.)

The writer of the Wednesday letter “Cold spell froze out electric cars” asked where those of us with electric vehicles plug in during outages such as the one Texas experienced with its deregulated grid.

First, I would note that gas pumps stop working in power outages because the pumps are all electric. And without power at commercial businesses such as food stores, restaurants, etc., where would they go anyway?

Second, many electric vehicles offered today can go well over 200 miles before needing a charge, with mine rated for 353 miles on a full charge.

Third, the power outages, except tragically in poor neighborhoods without electric vehicles or even regular polluting cars in many cases, lasted around three days. This means that most electric vehicle owners were just fine until power was restored, when average daily use is taken into account.

Fourth, many electric vehicle owners are installing solar with battery backup and could charge, if truly needed, right at home.

The letter writer could have researched this for himself but was too interested in some other agenda.
