Countless Nevadans have dogs who are vital, beloved members of our families and communities. They are with us through thick and thin, and the idea of having to separate from these beloved family members is heartbreaking. Tragically, however, barriers to pet-friendly housing leave thousands of dogs and cats at risk of being relinquished to animal shelters each year if their families lose their homes.
One such obstacle pet parents face is property insurance companies that can raise insurance prices or deny coverage for families with certain breeds of dogs. The American Veterinary Medical Association, in addition to many other well-respected organizations, affirmed that breed is not a factor that indicates aggression. Rather, the risk associated with a dog is based on its individual behavior and history. Still, insurance companies continue with discriminatory policies and breed restriction lists that vary widely.
Fortunately, this legislative session, the state Senate is considering SB103, which would require insurance companies to meet the standards set by existing state law and stop this discriminatory practice. I am grateful to be able to thank my state senator, Dallas Harris, for being a cosponsor on this vital legislation, and I urge all legislators to vote yes on this bill.
