Chris Avila rushed for more than 200 yards and a touchdown tonight for Coronado in a 13-0 playoff win over visiting Basic.

Coronado’s performance wasn’t as crisp as coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. would have liked, but that could be partially credited to receiving a bye in last week’s initial playoff round. And the Coronado defense was lights out, especially with UNR commit Ike Nnakenyi constantly making plays in the Basic backfield.

Basic was limited to about 150 total yards.

“Our defense is one of the best,” Biletnikoff said. “They’ve fed off each other all year long.”

And Avila also received high praise from his coach, who said his 5-foot-5 senior rusher would have established many longstanding school records if it weren’t for not having a season last year because of the pandemic. Avila entered tonight with 815 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns through eight games, according to stats entered by the program onto MaxPreps.

Coronado plays Silverado next week in the state semifinals. When the schools met earlier in the season, Silverado won 32-14.
