ELKO — An Elko County woman agreed to a plea bargain deal that will keep her out of jail in the death of a 65-year-old woman struck and killed by a car at a gas station in Elko last year near Interstate 80.
Lauren Allen of Spring Creek earlier pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter in the pedestrian’s death at the Maverick station in September 2020 on the Mountain City Highway.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports Judge Randall Soderquist ordered her during sentencing Thursday in Justice Court to attend a victim impact panel and pay the admittance fees, the Elko Daily Free Press reported.
Elko County Deputy District Attorney Justin Barainca says prosecutors consulted with the victim’s family who was “on board with the resolution.” She could have faced a maximum of up to six months in a jail and a $1,000 fine.
Police said their investigation at the time determined “congestion around the gas pumps and poor visibility caused by the setting sun were both factors in the accident.”
Police say Allen was “upset and crying” when officers interviewed her at the scene where she said she pulled in behind a truck with a trailer at a gas pump and never saw the victim.
