Joaquin Gunter had two touchdown runs today for the Basic High football team in a 48-21 first-round playoff win over visiting Chaparral.

It was Basic’s first playoff win since 2016.

“The kids played well,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. “They are definitely happy to move on.”

Quarterback Damian Gramajo had a 40-yard touchdown pass to Daishawn Fletcher and also rushed for a touchdown. Rushing scores were also had by Tre Mcallister and Marcellus Moore.

Basic advances to play Coronado next week in the class 4A state quarterfinals.

“That’s three wins in a row for us. We need to keep the positive energy going,” Cahill said. “Coronado is a good team. They won their division. We know how good they are. It’s going to be a battle.”
