A multitude of challenges face all of us today, and there just doesn’t seem to be a respite from the acrimonious cacophony echoing across our country. In politics, social media, news reports and even school board meetings, compromise and reconciliation rarely occur. Somehow, we must get through this climate of absolutism to work toward sensible solutions to significant problems that have become endemic to our daily life. Instead of shouting at one another, we should listen to one another. Lower the heat.
Having said that, we do share a love for our American democracy, however tattered it may seem to be. Through this common love of country, we should reject the actions that occurred at the Capitol on Jan. 6. What happened that day was not an example of American democracy. Rather, it was thousands of misinformed citizens, rioters and malcontents who mistakenly wrapped themselves in their misguided constitutional body armor to overwhelm, assault and delay a legitimate, democratic and statutory process. Berlin 1933 is not who we are.
There was no steal. Courts across the land have ruled and rejected the specious claims as meritless. Various state recounts have confirmed the results. Final score: 306-232. It’s over. Let us move forward by urging our representatives to work together to pass legislation that can support all of us as we leave the fractious falsehoods of destructive discord behind.
Is not that what we the people can and should do for our country?
