Large fire breaks out at North Las Vegas recycling plant

Mon, Sep 13, 2021 (11:28 a.m.)

Firefighters contained a large blaze at a North Las Vegas recycling plant today that burned hundreds of bundles of recyclable cardboard and plastic, officials said.

Nobody was injured, officials said.

Firefighters from North Las Vegas, Las Vegas and Clark County were expected to remain at Republic Services, 360 W. Cheyenne Ave., most of the day to put out hot spots, North Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Nino Galloway said.

The fire apparently started about 5 a.m. at an outdoor storage area as hot materials were removed from a garbage truck, Galloway said.

The flames and smoke spread inside the recycling facility, but a damage estimate wasn’t available, Galloway said. He described the facility as a large open space with offices and a large warehouse.

About 60 firefighters remained at the scene late this morning, and water was being sprayed on the site to keep the fire from restarting, Galloway said.
