LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

War disrupts food supply

Thu, Mar 24, 2022 (2 a.m.)

Ukraine is the breadbasket for much of Europe. The continent and parts of North Africa depend on Ukraine for its corn, wheat, sunflower oil and many other crops.

Russia’s invasion is going to put this to an end. Even if these products continue to be produced, they will not be able to get to market. Vladimir Putin knows this, and will assure that his war machine keeps Ukrainian exports to a minimum.

What will be the result? Europe will turn to the U.S. breadbasket. The United States will try to meet the new demand, but the price of a loaf of bread, even here, is going to increase.

Will conservatives recognize this? You bet. They will invest further in grain stocks and blame President Joe Biden. You can count on it.
