The Raiders already have four quarterbacks on their roster, and now they’re trying out a fifth.

Colin Kaepernick will work out for the team this week according to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The UNR graduate has not played football since 2016, when he controversially began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police shootings of black men.

Kaepernick went on to sue the NFL and alleged its owner of collusion to keep him out of the league. The two sides reached an undisclosed settlement agreement in 2019.

Kaepernick started another push to get back to the NFL after the conclusion of the legal matter, throwing for a handful of teams in a public workout. The 34-year-old has maintained that he’s stayed in shape and confident he can help an NFL team immediately.

Before he became more well-known for his activism, Kaepernick famously led the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl 47 where they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens. He had another strong season the following year in 2013, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game against the Seahawks, but saw his efficiency wane over the next three seasons.

If the Raiders were to sign him, Kaepernick would likely be competing with Patriots trade acquisition Jarrett Stidham and undrafted free agent Chase Garbers for the emergency quarterback job. Derek Carr is entrenched as Las Vegas’ starter after signing an extension, and free-agent signing Nick Mullens is expected to serve as his backup.

The Raiders also signed veteran quarterback Garrett Gilbert in March, but dropped him two weeks ago upon trading for Stidham.

The players are currently in the middle of the offseason workouts at the Raiders’ Henderson headquarters for the next couple weeks before their voluntary minicamp begins June 7 and runs through June 9.
