Police in Nevada cracking down on distracted driving

Nevada law enforcement agencies will enhance their focus on citing distracted drivers Friday through June 20, the Nevada Department of Public Safety announced today.

Using handheld devices such as a cell phone, mp3 player or GPS device is illegal while driving, and violators will be ticketed, the agency said.

Officials stress that using a device at a red light is also illegal.

“The use of any handheld electronic device while driving is illegal in Nevada,” the agency said in its notice.

The Governors Highway Safety Association offers the following tips to avoid distracting driving:

• Turn off your phone or switch it to silent mode while driving.

• Find a safe space to pull over to make a call or ask a passenger to place the call.

• Set up a message on your phone to let callers know you are driving.

• Secure pets and children before starting your drive.

• Plan your route ahead of time so you aren’t relying on the GPS.
