Daniel Nevil had three rushing touchdowns for Slam Charter in a 35-28 win over Virgin Valley to advance to the class 3A state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Sports Leadership and Management Academy of Nevada, or Slam, is a public charter school that launched its program in 2019. A few quick years later, they are two wins away for a state championship.

“We were never going to set unlofty goals,” coach Mike Cofer said. “We were always going to challenge ourselves. Along the way, there’s been a lot of work. We have a lot of committed kids and families.”

Donnell Colbert and Andre Cade had receiving touchdowns, as Slam won its the sixth straight game.

The school off Russell Road and U.S. 95 doesn’t have a field, meaning games are conducted at whatever Southern Nevada high school will host them.

Most of this season was played at Eldorado, but Eldorado’s field needed maintenance and Slam beat Virgin Valley at Foothill. They’ll host Spring Creek of Northern Nevada in next week’s semifinals.

“Now I have to find a place for us to play next week. Foothill was so great, hopefully they can have us back,” Cofer said.
