Gunner Cortez had three touchdown passes today for the Virgin Valley football team in a 19-7 playoff win against visiting Eldorado.

The Eldorado team bus got stuck in traffic on Interstate 15 heading to Mesquite, which led to sluggish play by both teams in the first half. Virgin Valley led 6-0 at halftime on a Cortez touchdown pass to Jared Jensen.

Virgin Valley advances to face Slam Charter in the state quarterfinals next week. Coach Matt Woods says his Bulldogs “are going to have to be a lot better to beat Slam because they are big and physical.”

Cutler Crandall and Martin Jordan also had touchdown receptions for Virgin Valley.

The win closes the book on a breakout season for Eldorado, who beat Chaparral in the Cleat Game rivalry and a few weeks later won in Pahrump to reach the playoffs.
