NV Energy is again asking customers in Southern Nevada to limit their energy consumption during peak hours.

According to emails and texts sent to customers this afternoon, the utility wants customers to continue to limit energy use from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. — peak energy usage hours — through Thursday.

During peak consumption hours, the utility asks energy users to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid use of electrical appliances, turn off pool pumps, unplug appliances not in use, and avoid charging electric vehicles.

It also asks that people refrain from cooking from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and that they turn off “unnecessary lights.”

The electric grid in Western states has been taxed in recent days due to what NV Energy has called an “extraordinary” heat wave.

The high temperature today in the Las Vegas Valley is expected to approach 112 degrees, which would count as the hottest day of the heat wave.

According to the National Weather Service, the valley is in an “excessive heat warning.”

The ripple effect from the heat wave — and especially how it’s taking a toll on the power grid in California — has led to concerns about energy supply in the West.

In its message to customers, NV Energy said the heat wave “could cause a significant reduction in available energy supply for Nevada from Western energy markets.”

“We appreciate the conservation efforts our customers have taken these last several days and ask them to continue to do all they can” said Josh Langdon, vice president of transmission for NV Energy, in a statement. “While NV Energy is prepared to address the energy needs of its customers throughout the heat wave, conservation will help NV Energy avoid a more serious energy supply issue.”

NV Energy provides services to over 1.5 million customers in Nevada.
