Durango football coach Robert Cutts seemingly waited five years for this result.

The Trailblazers defeated host Desert Oasis 28-13 Friday in the season opener to give their first-year head coach his initial victory with the program. Cutts spent a few seasons as Eldorado’s head coach through 2018, and had long hoped to get another chance at running a program.

“It has been a long road since Eldorado,” he said.

Keimarion Taylor rushed for 162 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, and sophomore quarterback Aidan Hernandez completed 15 of 26 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Fudge tallied six receptions for 43 yards and two scores.

“There’s a lot of senior leadership on this team that I inherited,” Cutts said. “I brought some organization; that’s my No. 1 thing — to keep things running smoothly.”
