Metro Police celebrate its 50th birthday Saturday with a look back on what has changed.
The department was formed July 1, 1973, after the consolidation of the Las Vegas Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a press release said.
The department served 319,400 residents in 1973 with 1,000 employees. As of 2023, the department serves 1.6 million residents with 6,000 employees.
In 1973 there were 100,000 calls for service a year. Metro average 1.4 million calls annually, the release said.
The department also serves an average of 40 million tourists per year.
