Bishop Gorman, the perennial Nevada power and nation’s No. 1 ranked team, open the postseason tonight in the Class 5A-Division I state semifinals against visiting Coronado.
That’s right: The Gaels are two wins away from another Nevada title. And, theoretically, two wins away from a mythical national championship.
Realignment that went into effect this season created two more divisions playing for a state title, meaning schools like Legacy and Palo Verde in new Class 5A-Division III wouldn’t need to beat the likes of Gorman in the playoffs to win state.
But it also condensed the large-school class to seven teams — and none from Northern Nevada. Every school made the playoffs, with the top-seeded Gorman receiving a first round bye.
Gorman should have no troubles in beating Coronado, who was beaten by the mercy rule of a running clock when the schools played two weeks ago in the regular season finale. The Gaels would play the winner of the other semifinal between Liberty and Shadow Ridge later this month for state bragging rights.
The Class 5A-Division II will contest its state quarterfinals tonight, with Basic hosting city rival Green Valley in a Henderson Bowl rematch, and Faith Lutheran playing Foothill. Both games are expected to be closely contested.
