UNLV’s offseason makeover continued on Tuesday, as the basketball program added veteran guard Jace Whiting via the transfer portal.

Whiting, a 6-foot-2 sharpshooter, announced his commitment on social media. He is the second player to pledge to UNLV in as many days, following Monday’s addition of former DePaul wing Jaden Henley.

Initially an unranked recruit in the Class of 2022, Whiting played his first two college seasons at Boise State, mostly coming off the bench and averaging 3.2 points across 66 games.

UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger went into this portal window looking to add shooting and ballhandling in the backcourt, and Whiting checks both of those boxes. As a sophomore last year, he started six of 33 games making 50% from 3-point range on 0.9 attempts per game.

Whiting was an early portal target for UNLV, possibly because one of his most memorable performances came against the Scarlet and Gray. As a freshman in 2022-23, Whiting came off the bench for Boise State and scored a career-high 10 points in 13 minutes, making 2-of-4 from 3-point range to lead the Broncos to a win.

Whiting looks like a fit at backup point guard, where UNLV has a huge need, and could also compete for available minutes at shooting guard.

With Whiting and Henley on board, UNLV now has two open scholarships for the 2024-25 season. The transfer portal closes on May 1.
