Letter to the Editor:

Extend beneficial internet program

Mon, Apr 22, 2024 (2 a.m.)

The Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act of 2024 provides a monthly benefit that allows eligible low-income households to receive discounted internet service.

The program also provides a one-time discount that may be used to purchase a connected device, such as a computer.

Congress has only days left to ensure proper funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) or else more than 22 million low-income people are at risk of losing their internet access.

If Congress doesn’t act fast and approve additional funding, entire communities will be let behind. Low-income Native communities would be affected at a greater-than-average percentage, as this bill is for some Native communities the only means of providing much-needed connectivity.

The ACP is crucial to maintain, as it also provides for Black and Hispanic households that are disproportionately affected. I contacted Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., and thanked her for cosponsoring this bill, and I encourage others to do the same. When legislators do good for the people, we should let them know and also remember their honorable actions and efforts come reelection time.
