North Las Vegas Police has provided details in a Saturday officer-involved shooting, which is being investigated by the department.
In a video briefing, spokesman officer Brian Thomas said police were responding to a vehicle collision shortly after 9 p.m., when a Chevrolet Malibu traveling on North 5th Street ran a red light and collided with vehicles on Craig Road.
The driver of the Malibu was identified as Julian McCoy, 57, of Las Vegas. Multiple callers to police dispatch reported McCoy had a gun with him in the vehicle, and one person said McCoy threatened him when they approached to the car.
When officers arrived at the scene, they attempted to de-escalate the situation and gave the suspect multiple commands to drop the gun and exit the vehicle, Thomas said.
The suspect ignored the commands and raised the weapon toward the officers, Thomas said. Officers then opened fire.
He said a .22-caliber long rifle was recovered from the scene, and drug paraphernalia and alcohol were also found in the man’s vehicle.
Officers Darren Rigsby, Alexandre Chevalier, Logan Guerin and Christopher Dellorco, Timothy Barnes, Rodrigo Garcia and Robert Ryan all fired multiple rounds at the man, Thomas said. All were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. A female passenger of one of the vehicles involved in the collision was transported to University Medical Center with minor injuries.
