Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin (15) celebrates with his team after scoring against Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger (29) during the third period of Game 6 of an NHL hockey Stanley Cup first-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars at T-Mobile Arena Friday, May 3, 2024.

Game 7 isn't where the Vegas Golden Knight or the Dallas Stars thought their first-round playoff series would end.

The Golden Knights had a 2-0 series lead before losing three straight games to the Stars.

Dallas had the chance to close out in Game 6 on Friday but saw Vegas win its first home game of the series to force a decisive Game 7 on Sunday at 4:30 PST in Dallas (TBS).

"Neither one of us is pleased necessarily how it ended up playing out, but I think we're both pleased that we're here," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "It has been a real entertaining and interesting series with the swings and here we are."

This is the first time Vegas will play in a Game 7 on the road since 2019 — that collapse against the Sharks when Vegas led by three goals with 10:47 remaining and lost in controversial fashion. Vegas is 2-1 all-time in Game 7 contests.

"It's the consequences of it," Cassidy said when asked what makes Game 7 so special. "It's win or go home. I think everyone loves the challenge of that. The guys are very competitive on both sides."

Cassidy didn't say who was starting in goal Sunday between Logan Thompson and Adin Hill, who is coming off a 23-save shutout performance in Game 6. And last season he blanked the Stars twice, including a 6-0 victory on the road to knock Dallas out of the playoffs.

Logan Thompson started the first four games series; Hill the last two.

"Logan played more and was on his game and Adin was still trying to find it," Cassidy said. "But we know Adin has the experience of being there, so we're balancing the two of them and here we are."

Every game in this series has been close with Game 7 setting up to be another entertaining matchup. The winner will face Colorado in the second round. If Vegas wins, Game 1 will be in Denver.

"My guess is it will be a very close game," Cassidy said. "If we can make the right plays again at the right time I like our chances."
