Letter to the Editor:

Tiny fish are a big waste of money

Mon, May 6, 2024 (2 a.m.)

The May 1 story “Devils Hole pupfish population reaches a 25-year high in census,” regarding the sole habitat for this tiny fish, averaging less than 1 inch in length, was enlightening.

Should every American be proud of the results of spending millions of taxpayer dollars since 1967 to ensure these tiny fish survive? Not to be discounted is the Moapa Dace, whose entire habitat is confined to the 116-acre Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the 1,218-acre tract the Southern Nevada Water Authority bought for $69 million in 2007 — $56,000 per acre to protect around 1,000 finger-length fish.

That comes to $69,000 per fish. Let’s focus on using our limited resources on real need.
