Which Jim Gibbons do you believe on gay rights?

Thu, May 21, 2009 (3:10 p.m.)

As an assemblyman 16 years ago, Jim Gibbons, in a letter to the publisher of a gay newspaper, did not sound like the Jim Gibbons who has threatened to veto a domestic partnerships bill. The letter was about eliminating the sodomy law and the assemblyman sounded almost compassionate and understanding that laws barring gays from living their lives are not "in the best ultimate interest of a secular democracy." Who is the guy who wrote the letter posted at right?

(It does have some literacy issues as you will see with the use of "statues" instead of "statutes" and "unresponsible" instead of "irresponsible." But there may be no better example of how a man changes to fit a political constituency over the years.
