A guard for an armored truck was shot in the ankle when a struggle ensued during an attempted robbery outside a bank on Spring Mountain Road on Thursday morning, Metro Police said.

Officers responded at 9:14 a.m. to a report of a bank robbery in progress at Wells Fargo, 4425 Spring Mountain Road, near Arville Street.

Police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said the guard for the armored truck was approached by an armed man in a wheelchair as he headed toward the bank's entrance.

The man demanded money and a struggle ensued, she said. During the struggle, a second man appeared and shots were fired by one of the men, police said.

The armored truck guard was shot in the ankle and suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Authorities said the men, described as being in their 20s, fled the bank on foot without money. Police said it appears the first suspect didn't need the wheelchair but used it as a decoy during the robbery attempt.

Investigators established a perimeter in the area because they believed the men might be nearby, police said. Police dogs were being used in the search.

Arville Street was briefly closed in both directions and the eastbound lanes of Spring Mountain Road were down to one lane.
