A man and a 14-year-old girl were sitting on a park bench Halloween night when they were shot, killing the man and critically injuring the teen, Metro Police said.

Officers responded to the 200 block of East Alexander Road about 8:45 p.m. to investigate reports of possible gunfire, police said. They discovered the pair suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds at a park behind a nearby school, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was transported to University Medical Center, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators say the victims were seated on the bench when five males approached them. Police believe one of the men shot both victims with a handgun a short time later and the group fled the scene.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.
