LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Keep our word, honor AIG bonuses

Thu, Mar 19, 2009 (2:04 a.m.)

Regarding the AIG bonus contracts:

I would not break these contracts. Doing so would give in to a need for vengeance. Although that thought is to a degree cathartic, in the end we would not feel good about “our word” as a country.

For whatever reason, we made a deal and signed it. It’s not the American way to break a real contract. To do so would forever stain our honor, and it’s not worth it.

What I would do is reason with and, if necessary, embarrass the people who don’t deserve these dollars. One hopes they will see how wrong this is and return the money. And if not, so be it. Let’s learn to do our homework before we give out money.

Let’s face it: There is enough wrongdoing and this is only a small part of it.

My suggestion is to deal with the larger issues at hand and begin to act like responsible people. Anything less reduces us to mob mentality —

and that’s not the American way.
