A Clark County School District police officer fired his weapon today at a person, wounding him, near Fremont Middle School on St. Louis Avenue between Maryland Parkway and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Metro Police became involved when five to seven people began running away from the school toward an apartment complex, police said.

The school officer suspected gang activity near the school, said Lt. Ken Young of the Clark County School District police force. When the man who was shot in the foot reached for something, the school policeman feared it was a weapon, Young said.

Fremont Middle School was locked down as Metro Police joined the search for the suspect in the shooting. The man went to a hospital where he turned himself in and no one else was injured, police said.

The shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Police officers were searching apartment complexes and residential areas near the school in the area of Canosa Avenue and Rexford Place late this afternoon.
