Quarterback Joe Portaro, who passed for 2,871 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2010 for Faith Lutheran High, will be a preferred walk-on with the UNLV football team.
Portaro, a first-team All-Northwest Division selection, had multiple touchdown passes in eight of the Crusaders’ 10 games. He also rushed for 10 touchdowns, averaged 43 yards a punt and had three field goals.
Despite the solid numbers, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Portaro was lightly recruited.
He said he feels he’ll eventually receive a chance to compete for playing time at UNLV. The Rebels have four quarterbacks on scholarship, including two from this year’s signing class — junior college transfer Sean Reilly will compete for a starting job, and Nick Sherry of Casa Grande High in California is a highly touted freshman.
“I like the way they run practice,” Portaro said. “They don’t like to rest at all. They are running constantly.”
